The rhythm of fluctuation brought by wood grains has been my theme of art for 36 years. It was representational oil paintings in the beginning. Becoming allergic to acrylic paint for surface preparation 10 years ago, I moved on to abstract art. After trying various materials, my works of recent years have been installation art, placing panels on walls. I made the texture of the panels by dying cotton hemp with sumi black ink or coffee, on the top of which I drew wood grains with gofun (paris white). The “shakkei” series began in 2015 during my solo exhibition in Kobe, where I painted wood grains live on glass windows with watercolor ink. I found the relation between wood grains drawn on transparent glass and the visible background interesting. Now I draw wood grains on thick acrylic plates. The series has developed into, “shakkei-construction” with concrete walls, “shakkei-ocean” with the sea in Okinawa, “shakkei-marble” with marble travertine, and “shakkei-art” with colored panels in the background.
As well as being a 2-D artist, I also focus on creating pleasant, experiential spaces.
